A creamy cream cheese crab filling in a crispy and slightly chewy wonton wrapper. You will most definitely want to make this for your next gathering or just for a nice snack. Be careful though, they are really addicting! I found myself “trying” them as they came out the fryer just to make sure it was safe to eat.
You can use imitation crab with this recipe but I chose to use a can of real crab meat. Just be sure to check for shell pieces. Both work just as well. If you don’t eat seafood, leave it out! The creamy filling is just as good. I also found adding finely diced jalapeño to the filling adds a nice kick.
Is this traditional Chinese food? No. I did not grow up eating this at home. This is an Americanized appetizer that is found at many Chinese restaurants. But its so delicious, I now have made it a tradition to always include it at my family gatherings.

Ingredients
- 1 block 8oz cream cheese
- 1/3 cup kewpie mayo
- 5 oz crab
- 5 stalks green onion
- 1/2 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp ground white pepper
- 1 tsp sugar (optional if you like it on the sweeter side)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, add softened cream cheese and mix until smooth.
- Add Kewpie mayo, garlic powder, sugar, soy sauce, and white pepper and mix well.
- Throw in crab and sliced green onions. Gently fold everything together.
- Take your wonton wrapper and lightly wet the sides with water.
- Add about 1/2 tbsp of filling in the middle. (You can use less but not more or it will explode while frying). Fold the opposite corners into a triangle. Take the remaining 2 corners to meet the middle. Pinch everything together trying to squeeze out any air. Repeat until no more filling is left.
- Heat oil to 350°F. Fry for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. Take it out and drain any excess oil with a paper towel.
- Serve with chili sauce and enjoy while it’s still hot!
